Roblox Plus: what the subscription gives you, and when it pays for itself

Roblox now has a monthly subscription called Roblox Plus. It does not deposit currency in your account and it does not unlock games: what it does is change the price of what you already buy and hand you things that used to be paid for one at a time, like private servers.

This piece lists what it gives you, explains the age rules that come with it, and shows the arithmetic that decides whether it is worth it for you — because for some people it pays for itself and for others it never will.

The short answer

Roblox Plus costs US$ 4.99 a month and is available worldwide. What you get:

• A discount on purchases. An immediate 10 per cent off game items, avatar items and other Robux purchases. From the third consecutive month of subscription, the discount goes to 20 per cent.
• Free, unlimited private servers. In games that support them, the subscriber creates and manages their own instance of the game without paying for it. It is the benefit that changes the most for anyone who always plays with the same group.
• Fee-free Robux transfers. You can send Robux straight to another account. Only subscribers can send; the person receiving does not need to subscribe.
• Trading, reselling and selling avatar items. A subscriber can trade and resell rare items, and also publish and sell their own on the Marketplace.
• A profile badge. A visible mark that the account subscribes.
• Bundles with Robux included. There are the Plus 500, Plus 1000 and Plus 2000 bundles, which combine the subscription and a recurring amount of Robux on a single charge.

For a sense of the audience this reaches: the announcement says 144 million people come to Roblox every day to play, connect and build.

How to subscribe, and how to do the maths first

Subscribing is the easy step: the subscription shows up in account settings and in the app store you use. What is worth doing beforehand is the back-of-the-envelope calculation.

A 10 per cent discount only pays for itself if you spend enough. At 10 per cent, you have to spend ten times the subscription price in a month just to break even on the discount alone. At 20 per cent, half that. Anyone who buys items rarely does not come close, and for that person the discount is irrelevant.

What changes the calculation is the private server. If you and your friends pay for a private server in one or more games, add up what you pay per month. That number goes in whole on the benefit side, and it is usually larger than the discount.

So the routine is:

1. Look at your Robux statement for the last month and see how much went on items.
2. Add up what you pay for private servers per month, if you pay anything.
3. Compare that with the subscription price. If the private server alone already covers it, the decision is made.

Each benefit, and who it is for

The table splits the benefits by type of player, because the subscription is very uneven: it is excellent for three profiles and almost useless for a fourth.

Who gains most: the player buying items every week, the group keeping a private server, and anyone making avatar items to sell. Who gains least: the person who logs in, plays a free game and leaves. For that last one, none of the benefits touches what they actually do.

The catches

The 20 per cent discount is not immediate. It starts in the third consecutive month. Subscribing, cancelling and coming back resets that count.

Transferring Robux has age rules, and they are firm. To send or receive without a guardian's approval, the account has to be age-checked and 18 or over. Below that, every single send and every single receipt needs the guardian to approve it, one at a time. The announcement itself warns that these requirements may keep evolving, including to reflect regional rules.

Private servers depend on the game. The benefit applies in supported games. A game that never implemented private servers does not get them because you subscribed.

A discount is not Robux. The discount comes off the price of what you buy. It does not deposit anything in your account, and there is no way to cash out the difference.

Be careful with anyone offering Plus at no cost. There is no legitimate offer of a free subscription — a site or person offering one is after your data or your account. The way to subscribe is inside Roblox, and only there.

The price is in dollars. The announced figure is in US dollars. What shows up in your store depends on the country, the currency and local taxes, and it may not be a direct conversion.

Subscribing inside a game is still subscribing. Some games offer the subscription from within, in a window that appears mid-session. It is the same product and the same monthly charge — all that changes is where you clicked. If you do not want a recurring charge, the moment to decide is before you confirm, not after.

Cancelling does not refund the month. Like any subscription, cancelling applies to the next renewal. The month already paid runs to the end, and the discount disappears when it does.

What to do next

If you did the maths and it worked out, subscribe for three consecutive months before judging — that is when the discount doubles, and judging in the first month is judging the worse version of the product.

If the maths did not work out, there is a middle path: the bundles with Robux included. If you would buy Robux every month anyway, the bundle merges the two charges and you get the benefits without raising your spending much. But check the bundle amount against what you actually spend, not against what you would like to spend.

And if you are under 18, the conversation before subscribing is with whoever pays. The subscription is recurring, and the Robux transfer rules will require a guardian's approval regardless.
